do you have any good grooming tips?

I am a tick-of-the-trade, tip queen. I have tons.

As for shampoos, I use different things based on what I’m aiming for. I use Toad Jelly (posted about in my product reviews). It keeps flies away really well. For color, I use Quik Black (alternatively, there’s a Quik Grey for greys), which is a color enhancing shampoo for bays, and makes Gideon super super shiney and helps prevent sun bleaching. For all an around, good quality shampoo, I use Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner. I sweat-scrape him dry, then let him completely dry in his stall, because sun drying can cause the coat to sun bleach.

Other good grooming tips- Crest toothpaste on blazes/stars/snips to whited, diluted Windex to remove grass stains on grey horses, a scoop of coconut oil in your horse’s feed for a shiny coat, strong mane and tail, and strong hooves, Swifter Duster head (or any microfiber rag) to get dust off the coat.

There’s probably a ton more I’m forgetting, but there’s a few!

Thats interesting. ive been looking for something all natural bc regular fly spray irritates my grey gelding- almost to the point where piece of hair have come off. but i cant stop using fly spray bc georgia summers are horrible as well as flies. this fly spray looks interesting, im going to give it a try.

It’s the best spray around, I promise. I’ve used it for about 3-4 years during the summer.

One more product review of the day.
So as it gets hotter, horses get sweatier, thus more flies bothering horses.
I’ve tried at least 10 different flysprays, mainly the Bronco brand, Marigold, Ultra-Shield, etc.
Toad Products.
I saw this brand at my local tack store about 3 years, and decided to give it a try. It’s all natural, no chemicals or artificial stuff. The flyspray they make is 1000x better than any brand I got from Dover. I’d apply it to Gideon before I tack him up, and even after an hour of riding or hours at a show, he’s free from flies. I’m hooked on this product, and since it pertains to the well being and comfort of my horse, there’s no lie that these products are amazing.
They make 5 different things:
Toad Juice- an antibacterial, anti-fungus remover, and for itchy/irritated skin. In the summer, Gideon gets irritated skin the bottom of his back legs. I spray this, and the fungus is gone within a day.
Toad Mist- the best flyspray you’ll ever use. Keeps flies away for hours. It’s all I buy now.
Toad Jelly- fly repellent shampoo. I had this last year, and lightly used it on Gideon’s face, legs, and under belly, before he would go out in his field. I’d come out in the evening after him being turned out, and he’d still be fly free.
Toad Stick- a balm used on raw skin, and also lightly colors horses- I used this ALL. THE. TIME. on my previous horse, Erin, who was a grey. It prevents sunburns on sensitive skin such as noses.
Toad Jam- pretty much a Neosporin for horses. Used on cuts and scraps. Not only protects it from infections, but also keeps bugs and insects out of the wound.
I’ve already purchased the mist, juice, and jelly for the summer. I can’t rave about this product enough. Plus, not only is it great for horses, but it can also be used on other animals such as dogs and cats (I’ve also sprayed my bunny with the mist to keep flies away, and since it’s all natural, it won’t hurt him.)

OKAY here’s the long awaited Cashel Half Pad review!!
I got it in the mail yesterday. Unfornately, Dover had folded it in half, so it was a little distorted. I rode in it this morning, and it fit my saddle perfectly. The review on the Dover website said it didn’t fit their saddle, but I have a 16.5in saddle, and it fit mine perfectly. The foam inserts are very nice and supportive. It has a crease down the middle, so again, it doesn’t pinch Gideon’s back and gives a lot of support. I ordered mine in black just to save it from showing a ton of dirt. All in all, I’m super pleased with this purchase, and at only $25, it was a steal.
